College Roundup : UC Irvine Manages 11-8 Water Polo Win Over UCSD

Juniors Dan Smoot and Kevin Wood each scored three goals as third-ranked UC Irvine defeated UC San Diego, 11-8, in a nonconference water polo match Saturday at UCSD.

UCSD (12-12) led, 3-2, in the first quarter, but the Anteaters scored six straight goals and led, 8-4, at halftime. San Diego came back to tie the score, 8-8, in the third quarter, but Mike Halphide scored the game-winning goal for UCI with 1:40 to play in the third.

Goalie Mark Maizel had seven saves for UCI; UCSD goalie Randy Franke had 15.

The Anteaters (13-7) face second-ranked USC at noon today at Heritage Park.

In women’s soccer:

UC Irvine 4, U.S. International University 0--Kim Cusimano tied Kim Grelsson’s school record for most goals in a season, scoring her 11th goal, in the nonconference match at UCI. DeAnne Auch, Wendy Kojima and Debbie Wilson each scored one goal. The Anteaters are 8-10-2; USIU is 5-12-1.

Chapman 1, Redlands 0--Melissa Wheeless’ goal three minutes into the game on an assist from Debbie Stuart gave the Panthers (4-14) a season-ending win. Stuart’s assist in the nonconference game at Chapman gave her a school-record 52 points over four years.

In men’s soccer:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3, Chapman 2--Cal Poly’s Dan Campbell scored four minutes into the second overtime period to give the Mustangs the CCAA win at Chapman. Scott McCrimmon and John Hudson scored for the Panthers (9-8-2, 4-4-1).

Westmont 4, Southern California College 1--Bill Simpson scored SCC’s only goal, as the Vanguards (8-10-2) were eliminated in the first round of the NAIA District 3 playoffs.

In women’s swimming:

UC Irvine 124, University of San Diego 88--Kelly Noble won the 100-meter butterfly in 1:03.20 and the 200-meter individual medley in 2:19.23 to lead the Anteaters at USD. UCI’s Lisa Williams won the 500 freestyle in 5:20.16 and the 100 freestyle in 10:54.86. Trishna Coleman led all divers with 198 points as UCI’s diving team beat USD, 28-6.

In volleball:

San Jose State 3, UC Irvine 0--Tenth-ranked San Jose State (18-7, 11-5) defeated the Anteaters, 16-14, 15-9, 15-7, in a PCAA match at San Jose. Kim Collins and Kris Roberts each had 11 kills for UCI (9-13, 4-11), and Roberts added six block assists.
