The World : Police Halt Seoul March

Share

South Korean riot police fired tear gas to stop more than 1,000 supporters of opposition presidential candidate Kim Dae Jung from marching through the streets of Seoul, witnesses said. The protesters were among more than 10,000 people who earlier attended a rally at Yonsei University. They backed Kim’s call for a neutral caretaker Cabinet to supervise next month’s election, South Korea’s first direct presidential vote in 16 years. At the rally, Kim accused President Chun Doo Hwan of trying to prolong “military rule” by refusing to appoint a Cabinet that includes opposition figures. Kim also demanded that Chun resign as honorary president of the ruling party to help ensure that the polls are fair.
