San Diego City Council members on Monday agreed to pay as much as $10,000 to the New York law firm representing the city in New Zealand’s court challenge to the planned America’s Cup regatta.

The firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges was retained by the city during arguments before the New York Supreme Court over the challenge, which asserts that New Zealand has the right to challenge the United States for the Cup earlier than 1990.

A ruling in the case is pending.
