City Council members approved an ordinance Tuesday to give residents of mobile home parks the right to buy the spaces they rent if the park goes up for sale.

The ordinance would give park residents’ organizations up to 45 days to buy the land after being notified of an impending sale. The ordinance is modeled after one that gives an apartment dweller the right to buy his unit if the apartment complex converts to condominiums.

City officials proposed the ordinance because of their concerns that the sale of mobile home parks increases rents and could force relocation of the residents, many of them elderly.

There are almost 5,000 mobile homes in 38 parks, according to city statistics. Park residents usually own their home but rent space in a park.
