Local News in Brief : Smog Study to Resume

Share

Air pollution scientists who conducted a massive study of smog in Southern California over the summer have returned to study air quality problems in cooler weather.

More than 50 research teams from the United States and Canada are scheduled to conduct the study between now and mid-December, concentrating the testing on six days selected for weather conditions that produce stagnant air and a build-up of pollution levels common to the winter. The testing is expected to begin at noon today.

The $10-million project, headquartered in Long Beach, is giving scientists the most detailed look at the region’s air pollution in 15 years. The newest phase will move from the inland parts of Southern California to the coast and focus on pollution problems that reach their highest levels during winter months.

The summer tests focused on photochemical smog and other pollutants that are highest in the downwind portions of the South Coast Air Basin.
