Charger Notes : Television Blackout Lifted in Time for Sunday’s Game
For the first time in nearly a year, the Chargers have sold out a home game in time to lift a television blackout.
Sunday’s 5 p.m. game against the Raiders at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium is sold out and will be shown throughout San Diego on ESPN. With the addition of 1,000 new end zone seats--the first phase of the Super Bowl expansion--there will be a record crowd of more than 62,000. That breaks the mark of 58,566 set on Nov. 10, 1985, against, you guessed it, the Raiders.
“I’m excited that this city is excited,” Coach Al Saunders said.
The Chargers’ last advance home sellout was Nov. 20, 1986, also against the Raiders. There have been six home games in between.
On Sunday, the Chargers will distribute 60,000 “Game Ball Fan Flags” in commemoration of something Saunders said after the Chargers’ last home game, a 27-24 comeback win over Cleveland. At the time, Saunders said, “If I had 60,000 game balls, I’d give them to everybody in the stands.”
