As a protest against the town newspaper’s refusal to run Berke Breathed’s comic strip “Bloom County” because it used a vulgarity, a Pueblo, Colo., radio reporter Wednesday read the strip on the air, then urged listeners to call the Pueblo Chieftain to protest the paper’s action. KCCY reporter Dan Thomas said his action sparked more than 1,000 calls to the AM station, but Chieftain Managing Editor Chuck Campbell said the newspaper would stand by its decision and not run the strip in Thursday’s editions. In addition, some members of the Donrey Media Group, which owns 54 small dailies in 15 states and 62 other papers in 14 states, said they intend to drop “Bloom County” on Sundays because of the objectionable language.
