Veteran ABC producer Av Westin has been picked to head a new network news department overseeing all “long-form programming sources,” including the 13-year-old “Closeup” documentary series and the newer “Jennings-Koppel Report” series. ABC News vice president Pamela Hill, head of the “Closeup” unit since 1979, will continue as producer of those specials that have won 20 Emmys and three Peabody awards. The end of the “Closeup” unit as a separate entity within ABC News leaves only the “CBS Reports” section at CBS News as a separate network documentary unit.
