Japan warned the United States to remove the $165 million of tariffs still imposed on its electronic goods or face a GATT dispute panel. Yoshio Hatano, Japan’s ambassador to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in Geneva, made the statement to a closed-door meeting of the ruling GATT Council, delegates said. Delegates said it drew no response from the U.S. delegation to the 95-member trade body. Washington imposed the sanctions due to Japan’s alleged breach of a 1986 accord on semiconductors, under which Japan promised to stop selling cut-price computer microchips on world markets and to open its domestic market to imports.
