La Mirada : 799-Unit Development OKd
Plans for one of the largest housing projects in the history of La Mirada won the preliminary approval of the City Council Tuesday night, all but clearing the way for construction to begin next spring.
Located west of Beach Boulevard and north of Rosecrans Avenue at the La Habra border, the 799-unit development will be built on former oil land owned by Chevron U.S.A. A development branch of Chevron, in partnership with the William Lyon Co. of Newport Beach, plans four different sections for the tract. Three areas will contain single-family homes, occupying lots ranging from 7,500 square feet to 5,200 square feet. The fourth section will contain 282 condominiums.
The developers have met several times with residents living near the site, and no opposition was voiced at the council meeting, City Manager Gary Sloan said. Council approval is necessary because the project requires a zoning change from the existing single-family residential classification to a planned unit development designation covering parcels held in common ownership.
