Local News in Brief : Cypress : College Trustees Choose New Cypress President

By a unanimous vote, the North Orange County Community College District board of trustees appointed Kirk Avery, 43, Cypress College president.

Avery, whose appointment will take effect Jan. 1, is superintendent-president of Palo Verde Community College District in Blythe, a position he has held since 1983.

He was recommended for the Cypress College post by North Orange County Community College District Chancellor James Kellerman after a national search.

The trustees Tuesday night approved a 2 1/2-year contract for Avery at a salary of $75,000 a year.

Avery will fill a vacancy created in June when then-President Jack Scott resigned to become superintendent-president of Pasadena City College. Cypress College has about 13,500 students.

Avery was a business services instructor at Santa Rosa College in 1982-83. In 1977-82, he was dean of business services at the Lake Tahoe Community College District. He was an associate professor in the business division at Cerritos College in 1975-77.

Avery earned doctorate and master’s degrees in public administration from the USC. He also holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Missouri. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University in New York.
