Local News in Brief : Plans to Mute Plane Noise
Four apartment buildings in El Segundo affected by aircraft noise have been slated to receive thicker doors and windows under a program approved Tuesday by Los Angeles International Airport officials.
The plan approved by the Board of Airport Commissioners is part of an experiment begun in 1985 by the airport to find ways to decrease jet noise inside homes. In 1985, 20 single-family homes in five communities near the airport were outfitted with the doors and windows, as well as attic and wall insulation.
Work on the El Segundo apartments which is being paid for with federal and airport funds, will begin in March. The cost to outfit each apartment building is expected to be between $7,000 and $21,000.
The apartment buildings are on West Imperial Highway, and have noise levels that exceed the level allowable under state law.
