The Soviet newspaper Pravda quoted leaders of Communist opposition groups in Iran as saying that dozens of political prisoners have been executed in what is apparently a new crackdown on dissent. “No other country in the world has such a cruel, despotic regime,” Ferrokh Negahdar, a leader of the outlawed Fedayan Khalq, a Communist organization, was quoted as saying on a visit to Moscow. Pravda also quoted Ali Khavari, a leader of the underground Iranian Communist Party, as saying that torture in Iran is widespread. The criticisms may signal Kremlin frustration with Tehran’s refusal to accept a U.N. cease-fire in the Persian Gulf War.
