Hollywood : Panel OKs Scaled-Back Project
An advisory committee Monday approved scaled-down plans for the Hollywood Galaxy, a project combining movie theaters, shops, fast-food outlets and an outdoor stage at Hollywood Boulevard and Sycamore Avenue.
Although an environmental report found that the project’s impact on traffic and noise will not be eliminated, the Community Redevelopment Agency’s local advisory committee voted 15 to 2 in favor of the project.
Developer Joseph Kornwasser said he removed a floor of restaurants to minimize the impact of the project on the congested neighborhood. This reduced the project’s size from 200,000 square feet to 144,000 square feet.
He also pledged $180,000 toward traffic improvements for the nearby intersection of Hollywood and La Brea boulevards.
The plan still needs the approval of the Redevelopment Agency, the Planning Commission and the City Council before construction can begin.
The project would occupy the former site of the New Garden Court Apartment, once a posh residential complex. The abandoned building later became known as “Hotel Hell” when it served as a runaways’ lair. It was demolished in 1984.
