May Department Stores’ income rose 20% to $89 million in the third quarter. The St. Louis-based retail chain, owner of May Co. and J. W. Robinson Co. stores, noted that the sale of Robinson’s of Florida and a Pittsburgh department store resulted in a pretax gain of $43 million. Sales were up 7.4% to $2.48 billion.
