WASHINGTON — The Senate Armed Services Committee voted unanimously today to approve Frank C. Carlucci as the new defense secretary.
The vote by the 20-member panel came without debate during a five-minute meeting. The full Senate is expected to approve the nomination next week, said Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), the committee chairman. The vote came a day after Carlucci told the panel that nothing in the Pentagon budget should be “sacrosanct” during efforts to cut the federal deficit. (Story, Page 4.)
