A Canadian syndicate announced plans to compete for the 1991 America’s Cup--if there is competition that year--with one eye toward returning funds for investors and the other on “blowing away the Americans.”
Michael Cornelissen, chairman of the Force 12 North syndicate, said the group will be a “professionally managed hurricane, which will blow down from the north and blow away the Americans, blow away the Australians and blow away the New Zealanders.”
Cornelissen said the 12-meter syndicate expects to spend almost $19 million for the challenge. Canada II, the Canadian entry for the 1987 Cup, spent about $7.5 million. The 1991 syndicate has arranged to purchase all the assets from the 1987 campaign, Cornelissen said.
A New York Supreme Court is considering the validity of a 1988 challenge by a New Zealand group, using bigger boats.
