Vandals in Redwood City painted swastikas and derogatory slogans on the outside of Temple Beth Jacob a few hours before the temple was to commemorate a night in 1938 when Nazis burned synagogues throughout Austria and Germany. Rabbi Herbert D. Teitelbaum said he was “shocked and outraged and angry, but not really alarmed. We don’t think it represents a trend or the feeling of this community.” He attributed the vandalism to a small group of anti-Semitics, noting that a month ago flyers signed by a group calling itself the White Aryan Resistance were found strewn in the synagogue’s parking lot.
