A drug seller pushed aside his cohorts to offer cocaine to a man in a parked truck, but to the dealer’s surprise the prospective buyer was a plainclothes sheriff’s deputy who placed him under arrest, officials said Sunday.

The deputy was sitting in a pickup about 9 p.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of Greenberry Drive in Valinda when a group of drug dealers approached him, Deputy Roxanna Schuchman said.

Derek Hicks, 22, pushed away three dealers, yelling: “Hey, get away, he’s mine,” Schuchman said.

Hicks allegedly offered to sell the deputy rock cocaine for $25, Schuchman said. The deputy was in the area on an unrelated investigation. The deputy told Hicks he needed to look in his wallet, Schuchman said. He then pulled out his badge and arrested the man.

Hicks, who lives on Greenberry Drive, was booked on suspicion of selling cocaine. He was held Sunday on $5,000 bail.
