Kenyan authorities today indefinitely closed Nairobi University after two days of violent rioting during which police beat students and foreign journalists.

Riot police, who earlier in the day beat students and chased other journalists, surrounded the downtown university campus as students left the residence halls with their belongings. Up to 3,000 students took part in the riots that started Saturday night after student union leaders were taken into custody by police, students said. Students said they were told to evacuate the campus before 4 p.m.
