Local News in Brief : Hunger strike continues

Share

Five UCLA undergraduates completed their fifth day of a hunger strike Monday in Westwood in support of students in the country illegally who apply for financial aid.

Camping in tents on Schoenberg Quad, the strikers vowed to continue their protest, which began at noon last Wednesday, until administrators meet their demands for equal evaluation of financial aid applications from undocumented students and more sensitive treatment from university staff handling the applications.

Undocumented students have the same eligibility for financial support as regular students, according to university policy drafted last spring. This year UCLA awarded financial support to 79 undocumented students, university officials said.
