Concerned residents, city officials and representatives of Texaco met at a community meeting in Cypress to review a proposal for cleanup of a contaminated 144-acre oil storage facility that is the site of a proposed housing development. Texaco has presented preliminary plans to remove groundwater and excavate nearly 40,000 tons of soil that are contaminated with low levels of toxic petroleum waste, hydrocarbons and benzene, a suspected carcinogen. The chemical pollutants were revealed in an environmental impact report prepared for Cypress Homes Inc., which acquired the property this year and has proposed building an 885-home housing project on the site.
