Paramilitary troops stepped up patrols in the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka as a campaign of strikes aimed at forcing the resignation of President Hussain Mohammed Ershad stretched into the seventh day. Police said 2,000 paramilitary troops joined 6,000 already deployed in Dhaka after 70 people, including four policemen, were wounded by hand grenades and homemade bombs in two days. Shops and factories remained shuttered, and business and transport were at a standstill across the country. The strike campaign followed the arrest of opposition leaders and the shooting of protesters during an anti-government rally.
