Monterey Park : Leachate Plant to Be Built

Share

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency announced this week that it has made the final decision to build a leachate treatment plant for the Operating Industries landfill on property north of the Pomona Freeway.

Leachate, created when rainwater and other liquids pass through trash, will be piped from the 135-acre portion of the dump south of the freeway to the treatment plant.

Monterey Park officials, who hope to build a commercial center on the 45-acre portion of the dump north of the freeway, tried unsuccessfully to persuade EPA to drop plans for the treatment plant there and to continue hauling leachate to a treatment plant in Vernon. But EPA officials concluded that it would be cheaper and safer to build a plant on the site.
