Building Ban Extended
The Redondo Beach City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to extend for one year the moratorium on issuing building permits along two small stretches of Catalina Avenue until city officials decide whether to change the zoning to commercial-professional from medium-density residential.
The moratorium on building permits for the properties on the east side of Catalina Avenue between Diamond and Emerald streets and Torrance Boulevard and Pearl Street was first approved one year ago.
The Planning Commission has recommended changing the zoning to commercial-professional, which would allow 30-foot-high commercial and office buildings. The City Council is considering the idea. The moratorium would be lifted automatically if the area is given a new zoning designation.
Most of the area was developed when it was zoned for commercial uses more than 20 years ago. In 1964, the City Council rezoned the property to medium-density residential, which allows 19 to 23 dwelling units per acre.
