CAMPAIGN ’88 : Gephardt Aide Resigns

Share

Don Foley, longtime aide to Rep. Richard A. Gephardt, has resigned as press secretary to Gephardt’s presidential campaign, apparently because of a dispute over his role in the campaign.

Associates of Foley said he had complained that campaign manager William Carrick had limited his access to Gephardt, whom Foley had served since the Missouri Democrat’s early days in Congress.

His departure occurred just a few days after the Des Moines Register poll showed Gephardt trailing Simon and Dukakis in Iowa, even though Gephardt has campaigned intensively in the state.

But Carrick said Foley’s resignation was not related to the campaign’s difficulties. “It has nothing to do with the status of the campaign politically or strategically,” Carrick said.

In a statement released by his office, Gephardt said: “I regret Don’s decision but I accept it. He has been a longtime adviser and will continue to be a close friend.”
