The Navy has endorsed a plan to berth the battleship Missouri temporarily under the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, pending approval to dredge Hunters Point Naval Shipyard to make it deep enough.

“The city’s offer will help assure timely use of the (Hunters Point) facility,” Cmdr. George Ferrar, spokesman for the San Francisco naval base, said Wednesday. “We welcome the innovative proposal.”

The proposal was presented Wednesday by Port of San Francisco Director Eugene Gartland and received the immediate support of Mayor Dianne Feinstein.

Gartland and Deputy Mayor James Lazarus said the Navy could rent the 11.5-acre pier at a reasonable rate. With approval from the Port Commission, the Missouri could arrive as early as next year, Gartland said.

Congress deleted the initial $22 million for dredging from the 1988 military budget after environmental groups claimed the Navy’s environmental study of the project was inadequate.

The dredging plan will be reconsidered for later years.
