Cygnus Is First of 10 Finishers in Race to Cabo

Only 10 of the 53 starters in the 800-mile Long Beach-to-Cabo San Lucas sailing race had finished by 4 p.m. Wednesday, but two more were expected early in the evening.

First to finish was the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet Class C yacht Cygnus, skippered by Noel Cobbs, South Bay Yacht Racing Club, at 1:10:42 a.m. The PHRF C and D yachts started from Long Beach Friday at noon, 24 hours ahead of the International Offshore Rule and PHRF A and B yachts.

Second to finish was Ernie Townsend’s Swan-46 Trumpeter, Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, at 1:37:2to save her handicap time on Cygnus and claim first in Class C and first overall in PHRF.

First IOR boat to finish was Roy Disney’s 70-foot Pyewacket, Los Angeles Yacht Club, at 11:58:57 a.m. to win first in Class A and first overall in the IOR division. Pyewacket was the only IOR boat to finish by 6 p.m. Her elapsed time for the course was 3 days 58 minutes 57 seconds.

Erratic winds south of Magdalena Bay and Cabo Falso made corrected time standings uncertain.

Boats that had finished by 4 p.m.: Cygnus, Trumpeter, Fowl Play, Dolphin Dance, Harlot, Gitane, Naiad, Ariel, Toboggan and Pyewacket. Merlin and Gusto were due within a few hours.
