Local News in Brief : Tustin : Bank Robber Sprayed With Dye but Escapes
A gunman robbed a branch of the Wells Fargo Bank on Thursday but was sprayed with orange-red dye after a dye bomb hidden amid wads of cash exploded, authorities said.
The dye bomb exploded after the gunman walked out of the bank, in the 14600 block of Red Hill Avenue, about 11:09 a.m, Tustin police said. Startled, the suspect dropped the bag of money but managed to pick up several wads of bills and escape with $3,035, Tustin Police Department spokeswoman Terry Richardson said.
Richardson said police were looking for a male Latino in his 30s, about 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 160 pounds with black collar-length hair and a mustache. The robber, who was wearing a red plaid shirt and blue jeans, also had a large bald spot behind his right ear.
According to police, the man had walked into the bank, calmly waited in line and approached the teller, handing her a plastic bag.
“He had a gun in his belt and he showed it to the teller and said, ‘Give me all your money,’ ” Richard said.
The teller complied, and the gunman left. He was last seen walking into the Tustin Green Condominium Complex, but a search of the area turned up nothing.
