600,000 GM Autos and Trucks Made in 1983 Being Recalled

General Motors Corp. is recalling nearly 600,000 cars and trucks from the 1983 model year to fix a broken switch in the pollution control system, the Environmental Protection Agency announced Thursday.

Nearly a half-million cars from the 1982 model year were recalled in July to fix the same problem.

Vehicles in Thursday’s recall are the Chevrolet Impala, Caprice Classic, Malibu, Monte Carlo and El Camino; the Pontiac Firebird, Bonneville, Grand Prix and Parisienne and the GMC Caballero. They are equipped with 3.8-, 5- and 5.7-liter engines.

The EPA said 598,588 cars and trucks were recalled, of which 30,649 were sold under the different California standards.
