Local News in Brief : Waste Treatment Plant

Share

A plant will be built to treat liquid toxic waste at the closed Operating Industries landfill in Monterey Park, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced.

The plant will be located on a section of the landfill north of the Pomona Freeway and is expected to occupy 1.5 acres, the EPA said. The dump each day produces more than 4,000 gallons of hazardous liquids, known as leachate, which are currently trucked to a treatment plant in Vernon.

The federal agency said it will continue to investigate the contamination problem at the landfill. While the leachate treatment plant is likely to be part of the final site remedy, EPA officials said it will be dismantled if it is no longer needed.

The Operating Industries site is one of 800 hazardous waste sites throughout the country being cleaned up under the federal Superfund program. The EPA has been responsible for operations at the site since 1984, when the landfill’s owners ended activities.
