Twins Out of Danger After Historic Operation
Siamese twins Patrick and Benjamin Binder, who were given a 50-50 chance of surviving their historic separation 2 1/2 months ago, were taken off the critical list Friday, doctors said.
“Doctors say they are out of immediate life-threatening danger,” said Lisa Hillman, spokeswoman for Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. But, she cautioned, “it is unknown at this time if these children will recover full neurological functions.”
The 9-month-old boys were born with the backs of their heads joined, sharing a major vein to their brains, which were separate. The twins were separated Sept. 6 in a 22-hour operation that involved several teams of physicians.
