Session on Ballot Measure
The El Segundo City Council will meet in special session at 6 p.m. Tuesday to discuss a ballot measure that would drastically reduce density in new commercial developments.
The Group United for Residential Rights, a political action committee, has qualified an initiative for next spring’s ballot that would cut the allowable floor area in new manufacturing and office buildings by including parking space as part of the area.
“Maybe we can come up with some compromises,” Councilman Keith Schuldt said, referring to the possibility that the council could decide to place a less restrictive initiative on the same ballot.
Last spring, voters approved a GURR-backed referendum that scaled back an office and retail development at Rosecrans Avenue and Aviation Boulevard. The group contended that the 1.1-million-square-foot development that had been proposed for the site--and approved by the City Council--would drain city services and aggravate traffic problems.
