A West German telecommunications satellite launched by Europe’s Ariane 2 rocket failed to deploy one of its two solar panels. Andreas Langemeyer, head of the TV-SAT 1 project for the Bonn government, told reporters that maneuvers could be attempted in space to get the panel into place. “The situation is not dramatic at all,” he said. “It is simply abnormal. A team of engineers is studying the problem. Nothing is lost.” The TV-SAT 1 satellite was placed into orbit Friday from Kourou, French Guiana.
