The Nation : East Experiences 2nd Day of Record Cold

Share

Record low temperatures chilled the East for a second straight day and wind chills to 20 below zero in the Northeast sent hundreds of homeless people fleeing to shelters in Boston and New York, where one man froze to death. Record low temperatures were broken or tied in eight states from New England to the Deep South. The mercury dipped to a record-low 5 degrees in Elkins, W.Va., 10 degrees in Worcester, Mass., 12 degrees in Binghamton, N.Y., and 25 degrees in Montgomery, Ala. Record lows were also set in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, North Carolina and South Carolina. The temperature dropped to 18 degrees in New York and 16 in Boston. Winds gusting from 25 to 35 m.p.h. made it feel like it was 20 below across much of the region. In New York, a 66-year-old homeless man apparently froze to death under a Staten Island bridge, police said.
