Mexico’s conservative National Action Party, the country’s largest opposition party with one million members, nominated a prosperous rancher as its candidate in the July 6 presidential election. Manuel J. Clouthier, 54, will run against Carlos Salinas de Gortari, nominee of the governing Institutional Revolutionary Party. Clouthier lost the race for governor in his native northwestern state of Sinaloa last year to the candidate of the governing party, but he received substantial voter support. The 14-million member governing party, known as PRI, has never lost a presidential election since its founding in 1929.
