U.S. Skips Waldheim’s Welcome to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan —
Austrian President Kurt Waldheim got a flag-waving welcome from Pakistanis today but the cold shoulder from the U.S. ambassador as he began a three-day visit.
Waldheim, under fire in the West for his German army war record, arrived to a booming 21-gun salute. Missing from the ceremony was U.S. Ambassador Arnold Raphel. Waldheim’s two previous foreign trips as president were to the Vatican and Jordan.
