Shooting Over a Possible Football Bet Puts Two Fans in Mississippi Hospital
Two spectators were in stable condition Sunday, recovering from bullet wounds that authorities believe stemmed from a bet on the football game between Alcorn State and Jackson State.
The Jackson Daily News reported Sunday a third man was grazed by a bullet and refused medical treatment at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium during Saturday night’s game, which was won by Jackson State, 19-10.
The Hines County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday no arrests have been made in the shooting.
The game was held up almost 20 minutes in the fourth quarter as fans scattered after the shots were fired, security guard Elton Wolfe told the newspaper.
“The fans slowly realized something was happening,” Wolfe said. “Then they started scattering all over the place. It was like a whirlwind. They started running like someone yelled ‘fire.’ ”
Wolfe said he was not surprised by the shooting considering the amount of liquor “flowing in here.”
Victor Tucker, 27, of Madison, Miss., and Glen Foster, 25, of Jackson, were both reported in stable condition at the University of Mississippi Hospital.
Last year’s game was also interrupted when a man wielded a gun, but no shots were fired.
