International Remote Imaging Systems reported a $165,000 loss for the third quarter, down from a $409,000 loss a year earlier. Revenue for the quarter ended Sept. 30 doubled to $1.6 million from $708,000.

The Chatsworth-based company, which makes urinalysis machines used by hospitals and other health-care facilities, attributed part of the loss to $90,000 in research costs stemming from the company’s development of a new product.

For the first nine months of 1987, International Remote lost $663,000, down 45% from its $1.2 million loss a year earlier. Nine-month revenue more than doubled to $4.4 million from $2 million.
