News media employees walked off their jobs today, causing newspapers to cancel editions and shortening TV newscasts as the nation’s first general strike in three years began.

Italy’s trade union confederation said millions more workers will be on strike Wednesday, the main day of walkouts expected to paralyze industry, schools, public transport and utilities, and government offices. The strike was called to protest government economic policies.
