North Korea will inform the International Olympic Committee within six weeks whether it intends to participate in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch said.

Samaranch, on a visit to the southern Chinese city of Canton to attend China’s National Games, met with Kim Yu-sun, president of the North Korean Olympic Committee, the state-run Xinhua News Agency said.

The Korean delegate asked the committee “to wait for its answer by the end of this year until the presidential election is over in South Korea,” the news agency quoted Samaranch as saying.
