Demolition will begin Monday at the site of the future Emerald Shapery Center, an office-hotel project that will take up the full block north of Broadway between State and Columbia streets.
The go-ahead for the project came after the San Diego City Council gave final approval Tuesday of the joint venture of Tokyu Corp. and Shapery Enterprises. Based in Japan, Tokyu is parent company of Emerald Hotels, which will operate a 450-room hotel on the site. A 30-story, 375,000-square-foot office tower is also planned for the block.
Tokyu is providing $100 million in financing for the project. Ground breaking is scheduled for Jan. 8, and completion is expected in late 1989 or early 1990.
