Lewis Tells of Deaver Meeting

Former Special Envoy to Canada Andrew L. Lewis Jr. testified today he discussed acid rain with ex-White House aide Michael K. Deaver in October, 1985, in a meeting prosecutors in Deaver’s perjury trial contend was illegal and motivated Deaver to lie under oath.

Lewis, former transportation secretary, said he met with Deaver, Canadian Ambassador Allan Gotlieb, Canadian chief of staff Fred Doucet and others Oct. 25, 1985, at the River Club in New York to discuss “where we were on the acid rain issue.” Deaver left his job as deputy White House chief of staff in May, 1985, after working with Lewis on acid rain and became a consultant to the Canadian government on acid rain and other issues. Count four in the five-count perjury indictment against Deaver charges he lied before a grand jury when he said he played no part in the naming of Lewis as a special envoy or in having any conversations with Lewis about his appointment.
