Jackson to Seek Hostage Release on Mideast Trip
Democratic presidential candidate Jesse Jackson said today he will seek the release of hostages and information on the whereabouts of missing Church of England envoy Terry Waite during his trip to the Middle East.
Jackson told reporters at London’s Heathrow Airport that he plans a series of private meetings and public appeals in Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia to obtain new information about the 23 men thought to be held in Lebanon. He did not say who he would be meeting.
In December, 1983, Jackson led a delegation to Syria for talks with President Hafez Assad. That trip led to the release the next month of American airman Lt. Robert Goodman who had been held by the Syrians after his plane was shot down.
