Long Beach : Zoning Appeals Undecided
After a lengthy debate Tuesday night on whether to accept appeals from people who want zoning variances, the Long Beach City Council agreed on only one thing: they could not agree.
The council split 4-4 on a request by Vice Mayor Warren Harwood that variances now appealable only to the Planning Commission be allowed to go before the council.
Councilman Tom Clark and others thought the process, which typically involves very technical issues, time-consuming and unnecessary when “we have major issues confronting the city.” Harwood and some of his other colleagues argued that they could better represent the community if people are allowed to appeal zoning variance actions to the council.
The issue will resurface in two weeks before the full nine-member council. Councilman Evan Anderson Braude was not present during the meeting Tuesday.
