Local News in Brief : Stanton : City OKs Disbanding of Police Department

Share

Stanton will disband its police department and contract with the Sheriff’s Department for police services, the City Council has decided.

The transition to sheriff’s deputies, effective Feb. 1, was prompted by dwindling city revenue and was approved after a hearing Tuesday night in which Assistant Sheriff Dennis LaDucer said the Sheriff’s Department could provide greater law enforcement services to the city of 29,000 for less than the current $2.9-million annual cost of the Police Department.

The Police Department is the second major city agency department to be disbanded. Earlier this year, the City Council eliminated the Fire Department, also because of financial constraints, and contracted with the county Fire Department.

Earlier this month, voters in Stanton rejected a tax override that would have generated an additional $353,000 a year for police services.

Under the new plan, the city’s 32 sworn officers and other police personnel will be allowed to apply with the Sheriff’s Department or some other county position.
