Local News in Brief : Building Ban Narrowed

Heeding complaints from developers, the Inglewood City Council voted 4 to 1 to amend a six-month moratorium on residential development.

The amended emergency ordinance will restrict development only in low-density R-2 zones, areas where single-family homes predominate. It will allow continued construction in higher-density residential zones while city planners complete a study and overhaul of the city’s zoning code. Construction in R-2 zones will be limited to plans that meet interim low-density standards introduced by the city in September.

Councilman Anthony Scardenzan, who represents a north Inglewood district in which many single-family homeowners oppose construction of apartment complexes, voted against the amended measure. He supported the original moratorium, which prohibited issuance of building permits in all residential zones during a six-month study period.

Adoption of the amended moratorium Tuesday starts a new six-month period.

After hearing complaints from developers, who called the overall ban unfairly broad and punitive, the other council members voted in favor of the amended measure proposed by Councilman Danny Tabor.
