A Salute to Veterans

Share

The Veteran’s Day article by Charles Hillinger regarding Arlington Cemetery was a fitting tribute to veterans (“A National Shrine Called Arlington,” Nov. 16).

The paragraph on Chaplains’ Hill should have included that Maj. Charles J. Watters was killed in action Nov. 19, 1967, as he was administering the last rites to a fallen paratrooper of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, and that Father Watters was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Each year, the members of the 173rd Airborne Brigade meet and honor all fallen comrades in arms, and there is a move to honor Watters with a memorial in his home state of New Jersey. The 173rd Airborne Brigade will meet in Chicago in July of 1988, and Chaplain Watters and 11 other Medal of Honor winners will be remembered. Thank you for telling the story of how America has honored its heroes.
