A Rancho Penasquitos woman has been convicted of two counts of animal cruelty for dragging a stray dog behind her car as she took it away from her neighborhood.

A San Diego Municipal Court jury deliberated parts of two days before convicting Victoria Manriquez Wednesday of the misdemeanor counts. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 7.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Bob Madruga said he will ask the judge at sentencing to order Manriquez to pay $450. He said the money would cover expenses of treating the dog.

Manriquez faces up to a year in jail and $1,000 fine. The animal, which had the pads of its paws scraped off in the June 28 incident, recovered from its injuries and was adopted.

Manriquez testified that she didn’t know the dog couldn’t keep up with her car as she dragged it down the street for about half a mile. She said she was taking it out of her neighborhood because it was fighting with her son’s dog.
