Constitutional Crisis Faces State of Iowa: Document Is Fading
Iowa’s 130-year-old constitution is deteriorating and may not last 30 more years, but a woman hired to restore it is leaving for a better-paying job in Arizona.
Secretary of State Elaine Baxter drove the 40-page document to Iowa City last March so restorer Sharlane Grant could begin work. But David Crosson, administrator of the State Historical Society of Iowa, said Grant recently resigned.
“The only thing we could have done is pay her what conservators are getting across the country, which is $30,000 to $40,000, and we aren’t going to be able to pay that in this state,” Crosson said.
